From its bookstores to its beauty salons, barbers, and bars, College Hill has been a vital part of Cedar Falls for well over a century. The Cedar Falls Historical Society tells the stories of this rich neighborhood in its new exhibition, “College Hill Memories: A Historical View.”

The Historical Society will open the new show with a reception at its Victorian Home & Carriage House Museum (308 W. 3rd St.) on Thursday, January 31. The reception will begin at 5:00. Guest curator Emily O'Loughlin will speak about her research at 5:30.

To create the exhibition, UNI student Emily O'Loughlin interviewed community members, business owners, and UNI alums about their memories of the Hill. Then she gathered historic photos, objects, and clothing from the UNI Archives and the Historical Society to bring their colorful stories to life. Visitors will get to see a 19th century Danish Bible, a comb for clipping a perfectly level flat-top, a 1960s mini-skirt, and a women's WWII WAVES uniform.

“This show tells a really interesting story about our college town and how its culture, businesses, and student activities have changed over time,” said Karen Smith, Executive Director of the Historical Society. “It's been a great opportunity to collect all of these memories of the Hill to preserve them for the future.”

This special exhibition will be up through 2013 and is part of Emily O'Loughlin's honors project for UNI. O'Loughlin is a double major in History and Philosophy. Her exhibition is sponsored by the UNI Department of History, UNI College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the University Honors Program.
