Discover the Magic of Holiday Hoopla
on Sunday, November 22, 2015
In downtown Cedar Falls, the Holiday Hoopla Kick-Off ushers in the holiday for hundreds of families every year. It’s become a family tradition to march down Main Street with Santa, visit Mrs. Claus at Santa’s Workshop and take in the holiday fireworks. This year, the magic will take place November 27 from 6-8pm.
But, there’s more to Holiday Hoopla than its kick-off the day after Thanksgiving. Until December 19, Downtown Cedar Falls hosts several events and activites for the entire family. And, it’s not just the variety of activities that attracts so many families and shoppers during the Holiday Hoopla season. Downtown is home to unique shops, restaurants and nightclubs that are locally owned and operated – a perfect destination for holiday shopping!
Here are just a few of the events taking place in December and some ideas of how to enjoy them!
Thursday, December 3, 5–8 pm
The streets come alive for this annual shopping experience – carolers, free horse-drawn trolley rides, decorated windows and a variety of unique shops offering specials and tasty treats as you shop. After you’ve kicked off your holiday shopping, relax with friends over a drink at SingleSpeed Brewing, Montage Upstairs or Whiskey Road. There are so many choices for dining out in downtown Cedar Falls, you may want to make a weekend of it and include Lampost’s Christmas Dessert Theatre (only 1.5 miles from downtown), Mary Poppins and the Cedar Falls Historical Society’s annual Christmas Walk in your weekend plans. You’ll also find Iowa’s oldest, continuously-running hotel in downtown Cedar Falls. The atmosphere and refurbished rooms of the Blackhawk Hotel may be just the ticket for your getaway!
Saturday, December 5, 8-11 am
Eat breakfast with Santa and all your favorite characters at the Cedar Falls Community Center. You might see the Grinch, Buddy the Elf or Sven from the movie Frozen! It’s only $6/person for pancakes, sausage, coffee and beverages. After breakfast, make a day of it! Stores on Main Street open at 10 am and Santa will be in his Workshop by 11 am. And, don’t forget our many sweet shops on Main Street (Chocolaterie Stam, Scratch Cupcakery, Main Street Sweets or Here’s What’s Poppin’). For the evening, have a family dinner at Tony’s La Pizzeria and make plans to attend Mary Poppins at 7:30 pm at the Oster Regent Theatre.
Tickets for Breakfast with Santa can be purchased at the door, or purchased early at Sassy Chic (218 Main Street) and World’s Window (214 Main Street). Contact the Oster Regent Theatre to purchase tickets for Mary Poppins.
Thursday, December 10, 6–9 pm
Batches of holiday cheer come in the form of unique, adult beverages during the Holiday Hoopla Cheer Contest. Downtown establishments spread the merriment when over ten businesses compete to win your vote for the tastiest holiday drink in downtown Cedar Falls. If that’s not enough, you and your friends can compete in the annual Ugliest Xmas Sweater Contest. Before heading back to your hotel, check out downtown’s newest nightclub, Deringer’s Public Parlor above Bourbon Street Bar-B-Que, dance at the new Voodoo Lounge at 401 Main Street or sip a cocktail at The Stuffed Olive.
Stay the weekend. Shop on Friday, treat yourself to a few sweet treats downtown at Scratch Cupcakery or Main Street Sweets and then work it off at Santa’s Snow Shuffle on Saturday, December 12!
