2016 Halloween Haunts & Happenings

There’s a chill in the air, the leaves are beginning to turn and jack-o'-lanterns are popping up all over town. It’s the season for haunts, fall festivals, and spooky celebrations! From the scariest of haunted houses to family-friendly hayrides and festivals, we have a big list of fall events that promise you and your family a ghoulishly good time.

Prepare for broad smiles and lots of goosebumps!

Enter if you dare! Those who are brave enough explore the many rooms of the Harris Haven Funeral home and then visit the gypsy wagon. It’s a killer combination!

Dying for a good time? Face your fears at The Heart of Darkness!

2016 Halloween Hikes are October 5-7 and will take place at River Hills School in Cedar Falls. Hartman Reserve Nature Center will conduct the walks.

Halloween Hikes, “The Travelers”
October 5, 6 and 7
6:00pm – 7:30pm
Enjoy a non-scary hike on a candle-lit trail with short performances by actors about plants and animals that travel long distances! Hikes begin at 6:00pm and leave every 15 minutes until 7:30pm. Wear your Halloween costumes! PLEASE NOTE that due to construction on Hartman Reserve buildings, this event will be held at River Hills School.

Tickets: $5 each (ages 2 & under FREE). Tickets are sold only in advance and sell out quickly. Call during regular business hours to check availability of tickets.

Waterhawks Haunted Hayride
October 15, 16, 21-23, 28-30
Open at dark
Waterhawks Ski Team presents its Annual Haunted Hayride fundraiser beginning October 15! Come out to Eagle Lake to experience the thrill of a Haunted Hayride with family, friends, and a cup of hot chocolate. Double check their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Waterhawks/ , for updates about their opening.

Fox Ridge Winery Fall Festival

Come for an afternoon of fall fun!  There will be fun for all ages and activities include a hayride, pumpkin launching, food for purchase, games and live music.  Milk & Honey will be playing live from 6:00pm – 9:00pm.

Hearst Film Series – Horror Classics

Every Tuesday in October, enjoy a horror classic such as Dracula (1931), Frankenstein (1931), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1932) and The Mummy (1932) at The Hearst Center for the Arts.

Twenty-five Years of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
October 7 – November 27
The annual exhibit of Gary Kelley’s original illustrations will be on display at The Hearst Center for the Arts. You’re also invited to attend the opening reception of the exhibit on October 14 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm. Meet the artist and enjoy music by the Bob Washut Trio.

Spooks, Spokes, Sneakers & Cycles
October 8
9:30am
Halloween Bike Ride, Powder Fun Run and Motorcycle poker run! This run/walk and ride event is suitable for all skill levels and the public is welcome to attend. Costumes encouraged!
As of September 28, plans are still in place for the race to start and end at Gateway Park in Cedar Falls. Double check their website for updates.

11th Annual Hickory Hills Halloween Campout
October 8
1:00pm – 4:30pm
Registered campers will enjoy an afternoon of t-shirt painting and a costume contest parade and prizes. Trick or treating for campers follows. Campsite decorations are also encouraged and judged after dark.

Location: Hickory Hills Park (3338 Hickory Hills Road), La Porte City
Cost: $13-$30 depending on type of campsite. Reservation sites are filled but first-come, first-served sites are open and tent camping sites are unlimited. Find rates on their website.

Cedar Falls Historical Society’s Inventors Cemetery Walk

Strolling with the Spirits

wcfsymphony Concert: Harry Potter

Bring your little ghost or goblin (ages 3-12) to College Square Mall to trick-or-treat indoors at participating stores. Arts and crafts will be adjacent the food court. All children must be accompanied by an adult and the mall asks that parents do NOT wear a mask to the mall.
