Nancy Price: An Accomplished Woman
on Thursday, June 29, 2017
Begun in May, Cedar Falls Authors Festival continues on this summer with July events featuring novelist, short story writer, poet, and illustrator Nancy Price.
Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in Detriot, Nancy Price has called Cedar Falls home for over fifty years. A former UNI professor herself, Price is also the daughter of UNI’s fourth president Malcom P. Price. Her poetry has won numerous prizes, and her novels have been translated into 15 languages and sold all over the world. Price began to publish her poetry in the 1960s while raising her three children. Her first novel was published in 1968, her latest in 2003.
An all-around artist, Price’s original book illustrations created for her own writing will be on display at the Hearst Center for the Arts from Friday, July 7 – September 20, 2017. Stop by when the Hearst Center is open to see the exhibition! Hours: Tuesday & Thursday 10 am-9 pm, Wednesday & Friday 10 am- 5 pm, Saturday & Sunday 1:00-4:00 pm (free admission).
On Friday, July 14, Seerley Park (on Seerley Blvd, near College St) will be transformed into a beer garden and outdoor movie theatre for an evening showing of Sleeping with the Enemy (Rated R), a film starring Julia Roberts and based on Nancy Price’s book of the same name. Sponsored by the College Hill Partnership, this evening of music and cinema will begin at 6, with the movie starting at dark (approximately 9pm).
Five of Price’s novels - including the feature film of July 14th - are set in Cedar Falls, and some of the houses mentioned in her fictional writing are very real, indeed. On Saturday, July 15, there will be a College Hill Tour of Homes featuring 3 houses that appear in her writing as well as the UNI president’s house and Price’s own former home. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Visitor Center on Hudson Rd., Hearst Center for the Arts on W. Seerley Blvd., and Sidecar Coffee on the Hill. On the day of the tour, tickets can be purchased at the Seerley Park shelter and the UNI President’s House.
There will be a reception for the book illustration exhibit at Hearst Center for the Arts on Sunday, July 16 at 1pm followed by a panel discussion at 2. The panel discussion, entitled “Sleeping with the Enemy: Novel vs. Film,” will feature Grant Tracey and Greg Holt, moderated by Barbara Lounsberry. The July 16 events in Hearst Center will be attended by Nancy Price herself.
The Cedar Falls Author Festival will continue to May 2018, reminding us all of the literary heritage and vibrant current writers of Cedar Falls. Check Facebook and the CFAF website for more upcoming events!
