Fall events in the Cedar Valley 2018

UPDATED! Spooktacular events and haunts are taking place in October! 

Below is a list of Haunts, Happenings and Trick-or-Treating taking place in the Cedar Valley.

September 21 – October 31
Heartland Farms
Scarecrow’s Haunted Barn, Haunted Scarytale Cornfield, hayrides, Punkin Playland, The Punkinator, Tree House Tube Slide and the Giant Jumping Pillow!

September 28 – October 31
The Heart of Darkness
Dying for a good time? Face your fears at The Heart of Darkness! They have more than ten themed areas including House of the Walking Dead, Boggy Creek Swamp and Killer Circus. And, they have Zombie Paintball!

October 5 – November 3
Harris Haven Funeral Home
Enter if you dare! Bravely enter Harris Haven Funeral Home and explore its many rooms and check out Ravenhurst Manor. It’s a killer combination! See their video trailer HERE

October 12 – October 27 
KW Paintball Halloween Zombie Shoot
This is where the undead reside and the humans try to survive! Visitors take a ride on the custom trailers through the paintball park taking out zombies that lurk throughout with 100 zombie killing rounds. Open Fridays and Saturdays in October.

October 19 – October 30
Waterhawks Haunted Hayride
Waterhawks Ski Team presents its annual Haunted Hayride fundraiser! Come out to Eagle Lake to experience the thrill of a Haunted Hayride with family, friends, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. This year’s theme is Carnevil which means crazy clowns will fill the woods! Double check their Facebook page, Waterhawks , for updates.

October 25 – October 31
Panic Park 
Prepare yourself to be scared! In addition to this horrifying attraction at Rotary Reserve, Hick’s Place will host Zombie Laser Tag every Friday and Saturday in October.

Haunts & Happenings 2018


October 3-5
Halloween Hikes

6:00 – 7:30 pm (tours every 15 minutes)
Hartman Reserve Nature Center, Cedar Falls
This year’s theme is “Home Sweet Home,” a non-scary walk through a candle-lit trail in the evening. A guide will take your family on a 30-minute walk to visit forest characters. Learn, have fun, and then have some hot cocoa and treats when you are done. Attendees are invited to wear costumes!

Hikes take place, rain or shine. Activities may move inside the interpretive center. 

Tickets are $5/person (no charge for children age 2 and younger) and available only in advance. Call 319-277-2187 or stop by Hartman’s Interpretive Center during business hours.

Halloween in the Parks
Black Hawk Park, Cedar Falls
You must be a registered camper to participate. First-come, first-served (no reservations).

October 6, 13, 20 & 27
1:00 – 3:00 pm
Hearst Center for the Arts, Cedar Falls
This is a 4-week workshop for adults (all Saturdays in October). Bring to life your very own stein for Halloween! Learn how to hand build and experiment with sculptural facial features for your stein. Try out your stein while sampling beer during the final session at this workshop’s sponsor, The Brass Tap. (Must be 21+ to sample beer) 4-day (Saturdays) workshop fee is $30 ($25 + $5 Clay fee).

October 12 & 13
Murder Mystery Dinner
6:00 pm
Isle Casino Hotel Waterloo, Ballroom
Get ready for one rockin’ evening of mystery and fun during this Elvis and Marilyn themed Murder Mystery dinner. $50/person.

Halloween Party
10:30 – 11:30 am
Waverly Public Library
Enjoy a family event with Halloween crafts, snacks, activities, and stories! For preschool aged children through early elementary. Costumes welcome! Free.

October 18
Haunted Library?!
8:00 – 10:00 pm
Waverly Public Library
Are you prepared to be scared? Join the Waverly Public Library for their annual event on Thursday, October 18. This event is their scary edition and meant for teens and older. No registration required (come and go). Free.

October 19
Haunted Library?!
5:00 – 7:00 pm
Waverly Public Library
This is the medium scary edition (not recommended for kids under 5th grade). No registration required (come and go). Free.

October 20
Frankentoy and Make-Do Lab
1:00 – 2:30 pm or 3:00 – 4:30 pm
Cedar Falls Public Library, meeting room
Make new toys from broken toys and junk. Activity is designed for children and teens. Children age 10 and younger will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Free.

October 20
Halloween Dance

7:00 - 10:30 pm
National Cattle Congress Pavilion
It's going to be a scary good time at the Waterloo Exchange Club's Halloween Dance. There will be dancing, a costume contest, appetizers, games, prizes and a cash bar. For ages 21+. Tickets are $35/person.

Cemetery Walk
2:00 – 3:30 pm
Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls
Hear stories of Cedar Falls potters and artisans buried in Greenwood Cemetery. No pre-registration required. $5.00/person

October 23
Halloween Carnival Party
6:00 – 8:00 pm
Hearst Center for the Arts
The entire family will love this carnival-themed Halloween party! Play games to win prizes and enjoy art related activities, creating your own monster and much more! Fee: $3/person. 

October 24
From Churchyards to Scatter Gardens: The Evolution of the American Cemetery
6:30 – 7:30 pm
Cedar Falls Public Library, large meeting room
Thomas Connors, associate professor of history at the University of Northern Iowa, will discuss how burial grounds have developed in the United States from colonial days to the present. Free.

October 26 & 27
Night of the Living Dead
7:00 pm
The Waterloo Community Playhouse will present an audience-interactive, staged-reading experience of the Night of the Living Dead in the Hope Martin Theatre. Some audience members will be part of a costumed, zombie chorus and there will be a zombie after-party. $10 general admission and $15 general admission (general admission with a zombie costume). Halloween House
4:30 – 7:30 pm
McCollum Science Hall (second floor), University of Northern Iowa
The UNI Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), in collaboration with students from the Departments of Biology, Physics, and Earth Science, will be hosting a “Halloween House.” UNI students will be performing Halloween-themed science demonstrations and supervising hands-on activities. Costumes are welcome. The activities are intended for elementary age children, but can be enjoyed by children of all ages. Free and open to the public.

Halloweentown Downtown

Cedar Falls Downtown District
Halloweentown Downtown, formerly known as the Witches Walk, will be a fun day in the Cedar Falls Downtown District. Great shopping and a costume contest!

October 27
Howl O’ Ween Pet Parade
10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Register, dress up your pet and head to the Cedar Falls Downtown District (there will be a costume contest). Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Pick up a registration form at Cup of Joe, Vintage Iron Co. or at Here’s What’s Poppin’. 

October 27
The Core’s Halloween Comic Fest
10:00 am – 4:00 pm
The Core’s Halloween Comic Fest is suitable for all ages. Receive one free comic book, get your photo taken with The Core's cast of characters between 10:00am and 2:00pm, meet guest artists and join the costume contest that begins at 1:00pm!

Kids Halloween Party

Hy-Vee, Cedar Falls (6301 University Avenue), on Ansborough in Waterloo, on Flammang Drive in Waterloo and on Logan Avenue in Waterloo
Kids can trick or treat around the store and decorate a cookie and a mini pumpkin. Free bag for the first 100 kids trick-or-treating! Need more info? Contact 319-266-7535.

Strolling with The Spirits
3:30 pm and 7:00 pm, reservations required
Snowden House (bussed to the Waterloo Cemetery)
Stroll through the paths of the Cedar Valley’s past as actors bring former residents back to life through live, historical interpretation. This year’s cast includes members of the Russell and Lamson families, among others. Hosted by the Grout Museum District, visit their Facebook page to purchase tickets.

After Hours Haunted Library Tour
6:00 – 8:00 pm
Waterloo Public Library
Join us, if you dare, for this after-hours celebration of the spooky. Make creepy crafts, eat scary snacks and take a tour of our haunted halls. This event is for 4th-5th graders and their families. Due to its scary nature, younger siblings should the tour the haunted tour. No registration required.

Teenie Halloweenie
3:00 - 6:00 pm
SingleSpeed Brewing Co., Waterloo
This is a family event with a monster walk and fesive music by Bruce Day. Halloween costumes are encouraged!

October 29 – November 4
Frankenstein Escape Room
10:00 – 5:00 pm
Waverly Public Library
Can you escape the mad scientist’s laboratory? Your team of 2-8 people should give this a try! You must make a reservation by calling 319-352-1223. For adults ages 14 and older. Free.

November 3
Concert: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas
7:00 – 9:00 pm
Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center
The Nightmare Before Christmas will be performed by the full orchestra, live with the film. Tim Burton’s delightful stop-motion musical features a magnificent score by Danny Elfman and will be shown on a full-size cinema screen.

Trick or Treat and Museum Minion Madness

5:00 – 8:00 pm
Celebrate Halloween in search of minions at the Waterloo Center for the Arts. Colorful refreshments and activities will be provided, Minion-style. Reservations are required at 319-291-4490. $2/person for members, non-members $5/person.

Jack-o'-lantern Night

6:00 – 7:30 pm
Downtown Waverly
Kids can trick-or-treat at participating downtown merchants.

Trunk or Treat

6:00 - 8:00 pm
UNI Schindler Education Center
It'll be a fun evening of Trunk-or-Treating with future teachers at UNI! The event will be in the parking lot of the Schindler Education Building. The event will move inside if there is bad weather. Event is free, but donations are welcome.

Trick or Treat at the Cedar Falls Farmers Market

Come dressed up in your best costume and join us for some Halloween fun. Candy and treats for all Trick or Treaters!

Trick or Treat Downtown Waterloo

10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Children can enjoy trick-or-treating at shops in downtown Waterloo. This is a family-friendly event with a Kids’ Haunted House in the Black’s Building and a fall-themed photo booth at the Main Street Waterloo Office.

Trick or Treat in the District

3:30 – 5:00 pm
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Merchants will be outside their shops for young trick or treaters!

October 31
Boo in the Loo Trick or Treat Maze

4:00 -7:00 pm
Hy-Vee (1422 Flammang Drive, Waterloo)
Kids can come in their costumes and trick or treat through the maze! Cost is only $2.00 per child with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization helping every child succeed and thrive in life.

October 31
Trick or Treat 

5:00 - 6:00 pm
The Reserves and Village West
Stop by the retailers located at The Reserves/Village West on Ridgeway in Waterloo (across from the United Medial Park) from 5:00 - 6:00 pm. Participating retailers in the strip mall include  Waterloo Golf Headquarters, Sidecar Coffee, Cherry Creek Grill, Amy Wienands Real Estate, Greenhouse Kitchen and ICON Donuts & Sweetery. Trick or Treat at the Mall

College Square Mall, Cedar Falls
It's time for indoor trick-or-treating for children at participating retailers throughout College Square Mall.
