RodCon 2019, UNI’s mini comic book convention, is back and better than ever! This year’s sixth annual event will celebrate all things comic books, gaming, pop culture, anime and science fiction in a fun, high-energy and inclusive environment. You can expect to see fans of all ages dressed in costume, visiting “Artist Alley” to check out and shop with local artists and creators, participating in role-playing or gaming activities, trivia contests, demonstrations and more.
This free, family-friendly event has been growing steadily since it premiered in 2014, boasting an attendance over 3,000 at 2018’s event. Bringing new faces and fans of all ages to the UNI campus to see what Rod Library has to offer is a huge part of what RodCon is all about. Connecting information and learning with pop culture is a fun way to encourage people of all ages to see the world through a different lens. You would be surprised what pop culture can teach us about diversity, sciences and even how a society functions. Whether this is your first RodCon, or you’ve been with us from the very start, you’re sure to find something fun and interesting to be a part of during our jam-packed day of totally free activities.
RodCon will be held Saturday, April 13, 2019, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm at the Rod Library located on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). This year, the planners of RodCon are partnering with CRUSH (Cedar Rapids Ultimate Super Heroes) and collecting non-perishable food items at the con, to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank. The goal is to fill up five 55-gallon barrels with donations on the day of RodCon. Bringing extra items for the collection will earn attendees extra raffle tickets for the door prize drawings for the day.

As is true every year at RodCon, this year's event is so full of activities, speakers, artists, vendors, silent auction goodies, gaming and demonstrations, it’s tough to list everything here in one spot! Here are just a few things we’re most excited about:
Panel discussions and speakers including Kat Leyh (freelance comic book artist and writer), Clara Meath (comic book artist and writer) and Terry Fisk (paranormal investigator and author).
Demonstrations including a pre-con performance by the UNI pep band, a Hogwarts potion class led by the UNI chapter of the American Chemical Society, foam weapon battles with the UNI Swordfighting Club, and more!
Costume Contests for all ages, with three divisions! Extra special this year because you have the awesome chance at winning free tickets to the Gallagher Bluedorn’s April 26 OK Go performance awarded for best robot or technology-inspired costume in our adult division!
This is just a tiny teaser of what we have in store, so be sure to check out the day's full schedule HERE.
