Fall events in the Cedar Valley 2018


Spooktacular events and haunts are taking place in October 2019

Below is a list of Haunts, Happenings and Trick-or-Treating taking place in the Cedar Valley.

HAUNTS

September 20 – October 31
Heartland Farms
Heartland is full of holiday fun with Scarecrow's Haunted Barn, Haunted Scarytale Cornfield, hayrides, Punkin Playland, The Punkinator, Tree House Tube Slide, the Giant Jumping Pillow, Korn Box, farm animals on display and lots of pumpkins and squash for sale!

September 28 – October 31
The Heart of Darkness
Dying for a good time? Face your fears at The Heart of Darkness! They have more than ten themed areas including House of Evil Dead, Crypt Keepers Vault, Creeper's Bus, Goblins Lair and Jack-o-lantern Lane. Or, why not choose 3D Kller Circus?! 

October 4-5, 11-13, 18-20, 24-27, 31 - November 2
Harris Haven Funeral Home
Enter if you dare! Bravely enter Harris Haven Funeral Home and explore its many rooms and check out Ravenhurst Manor. It’s a killer combination! And, new in 2019 is Jakob's Playhouse, a haunt for kids ages 10 and younger. 

October 11-12, 18-19, 25-26
KW Paintball Halloween Zombie Shoot
This is where the undead reside and the humans try to survive! Visitors take a ride on the custom trailers through the paintball park taking out zombies that lurk throughout with 100 zombie killing rounds. Open Fridays and Saturdays in October.

October 11-13, 18-20, 25-27
Waterhawks Haunted Hayride
Waterhawks Ski Team presents its annual Haunted Hayride fundraiser! Come out to Eagle Lake to experience the thrill of a Haunted Hayride with family, friends, and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Double check their Facebook page, Waterhawks , for updates.

October 17-19, 24-26, 31
Panic Park 
Prepare yourself to be scared! You'll have Halloween fun and help raise money for a good cause, Black Hawk County Parks!

HAPPENINGS

September 27 - October 6
Sherlock Holmes Escape Room

11:30 am - 2:30 pm
The game is afoot! Your team of 2-8 people should give this a try! You must make a reservation by calling 319-352-1223. For adults ages 14 and older. Free.
  

September 28-October 26
FrankenSTEINS

1:30 - 3:30 pm
Hearst Center for the Arts, Cedar Falls
This is a 5-week workshop for adults (all Saturdays in October). Bring to life your very own stein for Halloween! Learn how to hand build and experiment with sculptural facial features for your stein. Try out your stein with a beverage of your choosing while celebrating with classmates at the last session.

Adult class. Must be 21+ to sample beer and additional refreshments provided.  $30/$27 + $5 Clay fee.


October 2-4
Halloween Hikes

6:00 – 7:30 pm (tours every 15 minutes)
Hartman Reserve Nature Center, Cedar Falls
This year’s theme is “Welcome to Black Hawk County Parks,” a non-scary walk through a candle-lit trail in the evening. A guide will take your family on a 30-minute walk to visit forest characters. Learn, have fun, and then have some hot cocoa and treats when you are done. Attendees are invited to wear costumes!

Hikes take place, rain or shine. Activities may move inside the interpretive center. 

Tickets are $5/person (no charge for children age 2 and younger) and available only in advance. Call 319-277-2187 or stop by Hartman’s Interpretive Center during business hours.


October 12
Happy Haunts 5K Fun Run

10:00 am - 1:00 pm 
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Halloween-themed 5K will include fun décor along the route, music and special surprises. The kids will even have their own 1-mile fun run! Group sign-ups and costumes are encouraged. Registration, $5-$25/person.


October 13
Cemetery Walk

2:00 – 3:00 pm
Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls
Hear stories of Cedar Falls citizens who were involved in parks and recreation in Cedar Falls. No pre-registration required. $5.00/person

October 16
Family Halloween Costume Contest

4:00 - 11:00 pm
Spicoli's Reverb
No cover. Stop out for some family fun with a contest and food/drink for purchase in themes surrounding movies such as "Hocus Pocus." 
 

October 17
Pumpkin Painting 

4:00 – 5:00 pm
Cedar Falls Public Library, youth department
Let the kids get in the Halloween spirit by painting and decorating pumpkins! Family-friendly event.


October 18
Nailed It/Failed It: Spooky & Kooky Halloween for Tweens

Choose 11:00 am - 12:30 pm or 2:00 - 3:30 pm
Tweens, this is your chance to show off your frosting skills. Your mission: to "recreate" some common and not so common cookies. Register ahead. 


October 19
Halloween Farmstand

ARNKA Acres, Dike
9:00 – 11:00 am
Trick-or-treat around the farm, enjoy the petting zoo, activities for the kids and a costume contest…and of course the farm stand will be open! Free to attend.

ComicFest & Costume Contest

The Core
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Free comics, sales, the best costume contest...and all ages are welcome to attend!

Halloween Party
10:30 – 11:30 am
Waverly Public Library
Enjoy a family event with Halloween crafts, snacks, activities, and stories! For preschool aged children through early elementary. Costumes welcome! Free.


October 19
Howl O’ Ween Pet Parade

10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Register, dress up your pet and head to the Cedar Falls Downtown District (there will be a costume contest). Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. 


October 21-27
Family Escape Room

Monday-Thursday: 4:00 - 8:00 pm, Friday: 4:00 - 6:00 pm, Saturday-Sunday: 2:00 - 5:00 pm
Waterloo Public Library
Assemble your team of up to eight to solve all the clues in the allotted time! This is a scary escape room rated PG and not recommended for younger children. Recommended youngest age is 3rd-5th grade.

October 25
Halloween House

4:30 – 7:30 pm
McCollum Science Hall (second floor), University of Northern Iowa
The UNI Student Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS), in collaboration with students from the Departments of Biology, Physics, and Earth Science, will be hosting a “Halloween House.” UNI students will be performing Halloween-themed science demonstrations and supervising hands-on activities. Costumes are welcome. The activities are intended for elementary age children, but can be enjoyed by children of all ages. Free and open to the public.

DJ Jumpsuit Halloween Extravaganza

7:00 - 11:00 pm
Lark Brewing, Waterloo (3295 University Avenue)
It's a dance party at the brewery...along with a costume competition with killer prizes!

Haunted Library?!
8:30 – 10:00 pm
Waverly Public Library
Are you prepared to be scared? Join the Waverly Public Library for their annual event. Friday night event is their scary edition and meant for teens and older. No registration required (come and go). Free.

Halloween ComicFest

10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Visit Limited Edition Comics on College Hill for their annual Halloween ComicFest. This year's guests are Cory Hamscher and Mikey Babinski!

Hallowild

Noon - 4:00 pm
Cedar Falls Motorsports Park, Cedar Falls (7227 Waverly Road)
Gates open at 11:00 am. Come out for family fun at the drag strip...costume contest for the kids and adults!

Spooktacular Family Fun

Noon - 5:00 pm
Stop at Natural Grocers in Cedar Falls for a healthy twist on Halloween! Enjoy Good4U treats, face painting, DIY spooky snack mix and a Creepy Cottage Bag Deocration Station for customizing a Halloween bag!

Strolling with The Spirits

3:30 pm and 7:00 pm, reservations required
Registered participants will meet at Elmwood Cemetery
Stroll through the paths of the Cedar Valley’s past as actors bring former residents back to life through live, historical interpretation. This year’s cast includes members of the Mullan family, Mary Melrose Hanna, Thomas Cascaden and more. Hosted by the Grout Museum District.

Haunted Library?!
8:30 - 10:00 pm
Waverly Public Library
This is the medium scary edition (not recommended for kids under 5th grade). No registration required (come and go). Free.

October 27
Howl O’ Ween Pet Parade
10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Register, dress up your pet and head to the Cedar Falls Downtown District (there will be a costume contest). Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Pick up a registration form at Cup of Joe, Vintage Iron Co. or at Here’s What’s Poppin’. 


October 27
Teenie Halloweenie
3:00 - 6:00 pm
SingleSpeed Brewing Co., Waterloo
This is a family event with festive music by Bruce Day. Halloween costumes are encouraged!

October 29
Spooky Storytime

6:00 – 8:00 pm
Cedar Falls Public Library
Younger kids can cuddle together for a spooky storytime between 6:00 and 7:00pm. At 7:00 pm, the library will break out the scarier short stories for kids ages 8-11. Family-friendly event. Free. Registration required.

Fun for the entire family. Trick or treating, candy, games, face painting and more

Jack-o'-lantern Night

6:00 – 7:30 pm
Downtown Waverly
Kids can trick-or-treat at participating downtown merchants.


October 26
Trick or Treat at the Cedar Falls Farmers Market

8:30 am – 12:00 pm
Stop by the final market of the season to purchase your seasonal produce. Vendors will be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters! 


October 26
Trick or Treat Downtown Waterloo

10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Children can enjoy trick-or-treating at shops in downtown Waterloo. This is a family-friendly event with a Kids’ Haunted House in the Black’s Building and a fall-themed photo booth at the Main Street Waterloo Office.

Hy-Vee Trick-or-Treat

1:00 - 3:00 pm
At the Cedar Falls Hy-Vee store on University Avenue, the kids will enjoy trick-or-treating through the store plus mini pumpkin decorating, coloring activities and cookie decorating!


October 29
Trick or Treat and the Search for the Great Pumpkin

5:00 – 8:00 pm
Waterloo Center for the Arts
Celebrate Halloween in search of the Great Pumpkin! Colorful refreshments and activities will be provided. Reservations are required by October 25 at 319-291-4490. $3/person for members, non-members $5/person.
 

October 31
Trick or Treat in the District

3:30 – 5:00 pm
Cedar Falls Downtown District
Merchants will be outside their shops for young trick or treaters!
